Beau Photo

Hello everyone,
I wanted to write a quick note to encourage you all to go rent stuff from Beau Photo. I rented a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens from them over the weekend, and had a great deal of fun with it. The staff were very friendly and helpful, even when my nasty UK credit card refused to accept the enormous deposit I needed to put down for the lens. It cost me under $40 to rent this lens for the weekend (Fri PM to Mon AM), which is just fantastic.
Here are some photos I took (with my Canon 400D aka Digital Rebel XTi). Any comment/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sam

Bald Eagle - it would have been great if I could have gota full reflection here, but nevermind.

Short-eared owl

Northern Harrier - I was trying to get a shilhouette

Good Morning Sam,

I love the owl shot!
-here are my comments: I think it would look great in a Sepia tone...and it could be a bit tighter/focused.
The eagle shot on the beach is lovely but I agree with you on the full reflection it would have made the shot. I'm new to the city ..were did you take these shots?

Wonderful compositions, Sam. You have a nice eye for negative space. I particularly like the composition of the shot of the short-earred owl.

The images are a bit soft, but since I can't hold my 300mm lens steady yet, I'm guessing 400mm is that much harder.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Cheers ... Nancy

The light was getting low, so even with my aperture wide open, I had to have a shutter speed of 1/60 to get a correct exposure for the owl. I was using a tripod, but perhaps it would have been wise to use a remote control or timer to eliminate the dreaded camera shake.

Rebecca - these photos were taken at Boundary Bay Reserve, which is quite a way out of Vancouver, but is accessible by bus (601 to South Delta). It's supposed to be one of the best sites to see raptors in BC, and my experiece certainly supports that statement.
