Query - Photo Organization Software

I would like to be able to organize my growing collection of images, including labelling, tagging, searching by subject tags, etc. Can anyone recommend a good software package. I'm using the "Picture Project" that came with my camera, and it is cumbersome and slow.

Thanks ... Nancy

I've been using Google's Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/) and I think it is the best photo organization software out there.

It's able to do labeling and searching (unfortunately the tagging is available on Picasa Web Album -> the online version of it). One feature that I really like from Picasa is ability to geotag your pictures -> you can map them on Google Earth.

Hi Nancy,

I've been using Adobe's Lightroom and I love it...it does everything you're searching for...

I agree with Anthony, Picasa is great and it is super easy to use - something VERY important when you are a Luddite like I am:-)

Hi Nancy.
I have used Picture Project that came with my camera and don't like that it does not show the Histogram. I also used the Canon Software which is better. I like Picasa best and use that mostly now. Big disadvantage to me is that you cannot trust the properties fully. It may not always give you the exact settings you took for the picture so if you want to know precisely what your settings are, keep the images on your Nikon and check it there or check specific images in Picture Project. I guess Aura was right when she told me you get what you pay for. Freeware can't do it all. But for organising and also posting on the web I really like Picasa!

I've been using ACDSee for a number of years now and been fairly happy with it. It does a pretty good job of allowing you to organize your photos. It really excels in letting you view a large bactch of photos quickly as it keeps a thumbnail database for quick load times.

I've been thinking about looking at some Adobe products lately though. It seems Photoshop is the way to go when you get more into editing.
